When our tech arrived, the source turned out to be the cold water inlet connection, which had developed a pinhole leak at a fitting that had clearly been weeping for some time before the drip became visible on the floor. In most cases, no. If the tank is not yet showing signs of corrosion or structural failure, flushing out accumulated sediment can meaningfully improve efficiency and extend the unit’s remaining lifespan. The exception is very old units where a flush might disturb sediment that has been acting as a sealant for a minor internal leak. We can assess the situation before recommending a flush if the unit has significant age on it.
That timing usually points to sediment at the bottom of the tank. As the burner fires, water trapped beneath the sediment layer heats and forces its way through, creating popping, cracking, or rumbling sounds. It is one of the clearest indicators that a sediment flush is overdue and that the unit is working harder than it needs to.
